SANTA ROSA NATIONAL PARK - FROM GUANACASTE

Santa Rosa is a combination of an extense area of dry tropical forest, fauna and history. It was a cattle ranch, which hosted in the XIX century one of the most important battles in the Costa Rican history. The old house called La Casona that took part in this battle was consumed by a fire and now it has been rebuilt housing a museum. At this place you will learn important facts the natural history of the area.

After visiting la Casona, we will have a hike through the trails of this tropical forest with high chances to see the abundant wildlife.

For lunch we will drive to Liberia, the capital of the Guanacaste province, also known as the "White City" because of the white color on the roads due to the limestone content and the many white painted colonial houses. In Liberia we will find hospitals, stores and many other basic services.

RINCON DE LA VIEJA - NATIONAL PARK - FROM GUANACASTE

This National Park is located in the Guanacaste Range of Mountains in the North Pacific Region of Costa Rica. Las Pailas Sector is located 25 km northeast of Liberia. Travel north on the Inter-American Highway, 5 km from Liberia to the community of Guadalupe, then take the gravel road to the east, for 20 km.

This National Park was created to protect the biodiversity around the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano area. It extends over 17083 hectares of semi-deciduous forest and very moist forest and includes a barren rocky terrain at altitudes that range from 1950 feet to 5748 feet above the sea level on the Caribbean and Pacific sides of the Guanacaste Volcanic Mountain Range.

Upon arrival to Las Pailas Section of the National Park we will start the hike of approx. 1 1/2 hours in a loop trail that shows you the dry tropical forest and the volcanic activity consisting in fumaroles, hot mud pools and steam holes spreaded in this amazing landscape.

The tour not only provides the opportunity to appreciate Rincon de la Vieja´s geothermal wonders, it also allows a close view of an ancient forest hundreds of years old. Huge trees protect spider monkeys, leaf-cutter ants, toucans and all kind of great and small creatures.

ARENAL VOLCANO BY NIGHT - FROM GUANACASTE - DAILY TOUR

This is the most active and impressive of the volcanoes in Costa Rica. This almost perfect shaped volcano was covered with vegetation before 1968. Just before the big eruption during the year 1968, the people noticed that the cows could not drink water from the Tabacon River because of the rising temperature. After this, the volcano erupted violently covering more than 7 square kilometers ( 4.2 square miles ) with lava. Since that moment the volcano has been erupting daily at different levels of activity. This is one of the greatest spectacles of a visit to Costa Rica. It is incredible to observe and hear an eruption by daylight or by night. Seeing the lava rocks glowing down the hill at night is something you will never forget.

On your way there, you will ride through the heavenly landscape of Lake Arenal, a man made lake that provides water for an hydroelectric power plant and for irrigation in the low lands of Guanacaste province during the dry season.

The tour will take you primarily to the Tabacon hot springs located at the foot of this magnificent volcano. The hot springs have one of the best volcano views and are surrounded by gardens and by a lush rainforest. You will have time to explore the gardens, relax and enjoy the hot springs while keeping an eye on the volcanos activity until it gets dark! After dinner, in that same place, you will return back to the hotels in Guanacaste around 10:00 or 11:00 p.m.

After nightfall, the glow of flowing lava can be seen from several points in the area ( if it´s not cloudy ).

During the tour it is possible to spot toucans, guans, oropendolas, monkeys and coatis.

Once you get to the hot springs you will have access to a locker and a towel to keep your things.

BUENA VISTA COMBO - FROM GUANACASTE

Buena Vista is located near by Rincon de la Vieja National Park.

In this tour you will enjoy the primary forest on a different way: trails built up in the top of the trees (about 105 feet high). A small hike takes you to the first platform, from there you start swinging to the other 12 platforms, which are connected by 10 cables from 150 to 400 feets long.

During the canopy, that last almost one hour and a half, you will have the opportunity to observe the surrounding forest from a new perspective.

You might be getting hot by now because of the canopy, so it is time to cool off on the 1200 ft. long water slide.

After having lunch at the Lodge, we start the third part of the tour:

Horseback riding to the thermal waters, steambath and natural spa, located at the foot of Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. Here, you will enjoy the rejuvenating treatments with volcanic mud and mineral waters.

On your way there you will enjoy the wildlife of a transitional forest ( between dry and rain forest ), where you might be able to spot monkeys, squirrels and a variety of butterflies and birds such as wood peckers and toucans.

CANOPY CONGO TRAIL

This canopy is located in a little town named Artola very close to the beaches of Ocotal – El Coco – Hermosa – Conchal – Tamarindo and Flamingo.

After one hour driving approximately, we arrive at the site, where a tropical – dry forest and its high trees are surrounded the area. Once we get there the tour guides will get you ready for the ride of your life. After a short hike we will come to the first platform, ready for instructions to start flying down the suspended cables.

During the tour we will come across a walk bridge between two platforms, this is a truly exhilarating and exciting experience. If we are lucky even the Howler Monkeys will be our company during a part of the canopy.

MONTEVERDE CLOUD FOREST - FROM GUANACASTE

After the pick up at your hotel the drive will start until reaching Liberia and following the panamerican highway toward the Lagarto River. From there you will start a bumpy ride to the get to the continental divide where Monteverde is located.

Once at Monteverde you will drive directly to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.

The hike will be done with a naturalist tour guide at a slow pace and you will be learning about the natural history, the birds, insects and mammals that you could see at the moment.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve traverses the Tilarán Mountain Range, which is part of the Continental Divide. The area has been most appropriately named Monteverde, “Green Mountain”, since that is what travellers find at the end of the hour and 30-minutes ride up a long and steep gravel road that winds up the mountain range due northeast of the Panamerican Highway. The Preserve is a 5,000 hectare wildlife sanctuary, with plentiful tree, bird and insect life.

The unique geographic, topographic and climatic conditions in the Preserve have resulted in a surprisingly high level of biodiversity.

The Four Life Zones found in the Preserve are home to more than 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, 500 species of butterflies,120 reptile and amphibian species, 2,500 plant species (among them 420 different types of orchids and 200 fern species), 500 species of trees and thousands of insect species.

Among the 400 species of birds, some of the best known species are: The Quetzal, the Bird Bell, the Black Turkey Bird, the Mot-Mot, the Orange-bellied Trogon, and the Bare-neck Umbrella Bird. Among the mammals are found the Collared Wild Pig, the Small Deer, the Margay, the Spider and Howler Monkey, the Coatimundi, the Kinkajou, the Olingo, the Agouti and the Paca, the Two-toed Sloth, the Armadillo and the Weasel.

The Preserve is part of a block of protected areas, both private as well as public, that share borders. On the eastern side, and part of its northern and southern boundary, the Preserve limits with a protected area known as Bosque Eterno de los Niños, (Children´s Eternal Forest).

At the entrance to the Preserve, the elevation is 1,500 meters (4,900 ft). The high point on the Continental Divide is a place known as La Ventana (The Window) at an altitude of 1,560 meters (5,115 ft.). The highest point in the Preserve is the Cerro Los Amigos, at an altitude of 1,842 meters (6,042 ft.). The lowest point is the Valley of Peñas Blancas at 800 meters (2,624 ft).

The Preserve is located on the Pacific Watershed of the Tilarán Mountain Range. This area experiences a wet or rainy and a dry season. During the dry season, the country experiences high tourist numbers. This season runs from December through April, while the rainy season occurs from May to November. The rainiest months are June, September and October. Temperatures vary year-round from 45 to 75 F (10 to 25 C) and the months of December and January are the coldest months. From December to March the climate is windy and cloudy, and frequently there are light rain showers. The climate changes rapidly and ocassionally turns cold and humid. In contrast, the Atlantic Watershed, to the east of the Preserve, has a very short and less pronounced dry season than the Pacific side.

The Pacific Watershed gets some 2500 milimeters (100 inches) of rain per year, while on the Atlantic side, rainfall may reach 6,000 milimeters (240 inches). Visitors must bring with them rain gear, strong walking shoes, warm clothes, and be prepared to wear raincoats part of the time.

TAMARINDO MANGROVE - from Guanacaste

Tamarindo Wildlife Refuge protects a large estuary, mangrove forest and tropical dry forest in an area covering almost 440 hectares. In the mangrove swamp there are six known species of mangroves. The animal life in this wetland is quite diverse and abundant. This mangrove is included on the Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance.

This time an small and slightly boat takes you to the narrow canals observing on both sides at time. Will be able to observe closer rare and abundant wildlife – including dozens of bird species and two species of monkeys - while learning about the unique ecosystem of the mangrove forest.
